Guacamaya, January 1, 2025. Relatives and human rights organizations confirmed the release of at least 87 people detained for political reasons, although they warn that dozens remain imprisoned in the Aragua penitentiary.
During the early hours of this January 1, new releases of political prisoners from Tocorón prison in Aragua state were recorded, according to reports from mothers and relatives of the detainees. The information was confirmed by the Committee for the Freedom of Political Prisoners, which monitored the events from the first hours of the day.
Around 4:00 a.m., a Yutong bus, two Encava-type vehicles, and a van left the prison, transporting individuals deprived of liberty for political reasons. The group is said to consist of at least 87 political prisoners detained in the post-electoral context of 2024.
Among those released are reportedly citizens from various states of the country, including Barinas, Caracas, Bolívar, Miranda, Falcón, Zulia, Lara, Carabobo, and Yaracuy, among other regions.
Despite these releases, organizations and relatives estimate that at least 89 political prisoners remain detained in Tocorón prison, one of the country’s main detention centers.
Additionally, the release of Jonathan Guillermo Torres Duque, who regained his freedom after being held in El Rodeo I prison, was reported.
