Guacamaya, September 15, 2025. In a press conference on Monday, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro declared that communication channels with the United States government are “shattered,” but confirmed that contact remains with diplomat John McNamara regarding repatriation flights.
“The communication relations with the United States government, which existed on two channels, were already damaged in their time. Today I can announce that they are shattered. They are shattered, because of them. Because of their threats of bombs, death, and blackmail,” the president said during the press conference with international media at the Eurobuilding Hotel. This statement came in response to a question from CNN’s Osmary Hernández.
Another notable question was asked by Xinhua news agency correspondent Ji Fei Men: “What measures can Venezuela take to prevent the United States from again boarding and occupying ships in Venezuela’s exclusive economic zone?”
This was in reference to an incident reported by the Foreign Ministry, which stated that the U.S. Navy had seized a Venezuelan tuna boat for eight hours. In response, Maduro stated that measures “must be legal, diplomatic, of persuasion, of communication.” He also emphasized the importance of maintaining “calm and sanity” during the incident.
In response to a question from HispanTV, Maduro accused the United States of seeking regime change in Venezuela to take control of its resources, such as oil, gas, and gold, under the pretext of the war on drugs.
