Guacamaya, May 1, 2025. U.S. National Security Advisor Michael Waltz resigned on Thursday along with his deputy in Donald Trump’s administration. The event was first reported by CBS News.

In March, Waltz was embroiled in a scandal after including a journalist from The Atlantic in a group chat meant to coordinate airstrikes in Yemen. The former National Security Advisor may have committed serious offenses by allegedly sharing classified information with Jeffrey Goldberg, the magazine’s editor, after inviting him into the chat.

It remains unclear who will replace him, though Steve Witkoff is among the top candidates, along with other names like Robert O’Brien and Richard Grenell.

Waltz could be categorized within the “neoconservative” or “hawk” faction of the Republican Party. These figures have occasionally clashed with the new wave of Trump-aligned supporters, known as “MAGA” (Make America Great Again).

Regarding Venezuela, Waltz has a history of supporting sanctions and isolation against the country to oust Nicolás Maduro, dating back to his time in Congress.
