Guacamaya, April 11, 2025. The deadline for nominations has closed, and there are now five candidates for the state of Miranda, including interim PSUV Governor Elio Serrano. Venezuela is set to hold elections for the National Assembly and the governorships of all 24 states on May 25.
According to sources consulted by Guacamaya, the opposition will field four candidates: Juan Requesens (UNICA, a new party), Eric Ondarroa (Alianza del Lápiz), David Uzcátegui (Fuerza Vecinal), and Negal Morales (Alianza Democrática). The Comptroller’s Office has lifted the disqualifications previously imposed on Requesens and former Miranda governor and presidential candidate Henrique Capriles.
Capriles could have secured his own party card, UNICA. Otherwise, he would have had to run under UNT’s ticket for the National Assembly, just as Requesens will do for the governorship of Miranda. Before the July 2024 elections, the Supreme Court handed control of the Primero Justicia party card to José Brito, who had been expelled from the party in 2019.
The fragmentation of the opposition will likely facilitate a victory for the pro-government candidate, Elio Serrano, though no polls have yet been published with the final list of candidates.
Amid low voter turnout expectations, opposition parties are prioritizing securing seats in the National Assembly. Combining gubernatorial and deputy candidates could help accumulate more votes. However, this also means each faction will present separate candidates.
Talks are still ongoing between Juan Requesens and Alianza del Lápiz, and agreements between different opposition forces before the elections cannot be ruled out.
